Ciaran Update – Sleeping through the Progress – 5.13.12

Hi,

Post Swim Weekend Warrior

Last weekend, Shannon and I were able to get out for the evening.  Shannon’s mom, Ciaran’s Grandmother – Donna, watched over the little lady as she slept.  As we drove home, Shannon and I were wringing our hands because we really haven’t seen any progress from Ciaran in the last month.  It’s been pretty tough for the last 9 months to get Ciaran as much therapy as she needs.  Spending 2 hours in the car sending Ciaran to the amazing Chime school, has taken a toll on speech, PT  and occupational therapy.  She does get some of these services at school, but they aren’t as intense as she probably needs.Biking with "Poppy"

What she has learned at Chime is the ability to socialize with other kids in a very positive environment.    When we ask Ciaran to tell us about her day as school, it’s the most she “talks” in any given day.  Of course it’s pretty hard to understand what she is trying to say, but because Chime sends home a little paper each day that details what Ciaran’s activities were, we are able to shape the conversation some and then recognize where this chatty gal is taking things.  Despite not understanding the words, it is a treat to hear her little voice as she concentrates to kick her little words out of her little mouth.  Something we have desperately missed in the past few years.

Ciaran’s school is a little funny.  She gets a two week break starting this week, then goes back for 4 weeks to finish out right before the end of July.  We are excited to step on the therapy gas peddle these next few weeks as a prep for the summer full court press.  Got to get this warrior ready for Kindergarten.Working the Toothbrush...

Jessica does a really great job doing home based therapy during the week.  Lately, each weekend, I have been trying to push Ciaran pretty hard.

Sat:  Breakfast, the stander for an hour, work on the exercise ball and mat time for another 2 hours, followed up with some “walking”, which consists of me holding her up and pushing Ciaran to take steps.  After lunch and rest time, we get on her bike and push her around the block only to be followed up with a swim workout.Sunday Swims

Come Sunday: Hour in the stander, then head over to Ciaran’s grandparent’s house for a mile bike ride and 30 minute swim session.  Come Sunday night both Ciaran and myself are pretty wiped out.  Although not a ton of progress, she is getting stronger.  She is getting more comfortable being pushed and we rarely see any tears.

During these weekend adventures, we have been running into Owen, who’s a 4 year old boy that lives down the street who plays in his front yard.  Ciaran looooves Owen.  He’s a curious little guy with a big smile and always asks a lot of questions to (and about) Ciaran.  He’s always making her laugh.  When we get home, the first word out of her mouth is always “Oooohhhwhennn”!. Amazing when she likes something the words seems to work okay…go figure…   Yesterday when we biked by his house and he wasn’t out front, she kept staring over there hoping he’d come out.  No dice.  Hopefully next weekend.

The action plan for the summer – find a speech therapist who is close to the house (that takes insurance) who can really start to shape these works.  As Dr Larry said to us back when Ciaran was in the hospital, “the most important thing you can do is Speech Therapy”.  We have never forgotten this.  Speaking is empowering and this kid needs some empowerment.  Next focus is PT.  We took her to Nancy (the amazing PT who knows Ciaran well but hard to get into see her) a few weeks ago to get a few things adjusted.  We will also be starting up with CCS – a state funded program for PT and OT this week.  They have access to a lot of great equipment that she desperately needs.

Some times when you are wringing your hands and not seeing progress, Ciaran surprises us.  The other night as Shannon and I arrived home and were debriefed by Donna as to anything that took place while we were out, she said that Ciaran had rolled onto her back. (Red Alert – we don’t want Ciaran on her back for fear of aspiration.)   Because of her injury to the brain, as well as the muscle relaxant Ciaran takes as night, getting stuck on her back is sort of like a turtle getting stuck…with no way of coming back over to her side/stomach.  Well, as I looked at the monitor, I said to Donna, I don’t see her on her back….and Donna replied – that was because Ciaran had roller herself back over to her side/stomach (not realizing this was a huge accomplishment!)  Shannon and I perked right up and shook off our down moment to feel a sense of pride that this little girl with some many challenges, has conquered (as least for this evening) one of the major things that have kept both Ciaran and us sleepless almost three years now.  Who knew Ciaran would be making progress while she slept?

Funny how everyone has been sleeping much better since last Saturday night knowing there has been some progress.

Thank you so much for your continued support.  It really means so much.

Ciaran Update – The Hunt for the Golden Egg – 4/12/12

Hi,

It’s 12:15p on the Sunday before Easter and Ciaran is having a great day…dripping wet.

Ciaran and the Cousins prepare for battle!

Earlier she put in a hour and half in the Stander and rode (while we pushed) her bike a half a mile up and down Amalfi Drive.  Ciaran’s Grandparents Poppy and Gaggie (aka Bill and September) have recently installed a heater in a pool that hasn’t been above 70 degrees in over 20 years, just for Ciaran.  Now after 30 minutes of water time – splashing around, kicking, supported swimming, laughing away…she is dripping wet with a giant smile on her face.

We quickly power down a quick lunch before heading home to meet Meme (aka Shannon) in order to head over to a 5 year old birthday party.  Normally this is Ciaran’s “rest” time for an hour but we have over booked her.

At the party, our good friends Karen and Kevin Chamberlain have this mega kids “jumpy”.  We arrive at the party right as it’s ending which leaves us alone to tackle some serious jumping.  With a giant grin, Ciaran and I climb in and proceed to get her up on her feet and jump away for another 20 minutes!  She was having a blast but I could tell (from my own legs) she had enough.

After a some great cake – Ciaran, Shannon and myself, tired, head home for the late afternoon before dinner.  Finally being home, we got a bit caught up and end up feeding Ciaran a bit late.  Little did we realize, Ciaran had more exercise than any day since she emerged from the hospital almost 2 and half years ago.

Most kids, pushed to their limits without knowing it, would get cranky, cry but be able to some what retain a little control and be able to communicate effectively that they just need to go to bed.

Godfather Gary and Poppy joined us for the hunt or the golden egg.

The little Olympiad was barely 5 minutes into dinner when the melt down started.  After an hour of straight screaming while giving her some hydration and food through her tube, she is in bed trying to control herself but it’s just not working.  Eyes swollen, exhausted, body having spasms every 20 seconds, we finally get her on her stomach, put some pressure on her twitching arms and diffuse the spasms  into the bed as they are now waking her up, like you would when you are just falling asleep and something startles you.  They finally stop and she’s out…it’s 6:30p…

A rough ending to an amazing day.  We learned a lot that Sunday.  It was sort of like a full day of margaritas on Cinco de Mayo…you are feeling like a million bucks in the heat of the moment only to have it give you a good bite on the back end.  Moderation…from now on.

Ciaran was out of school all last week on spring break.  We tried to get her into structured therapy but to no avail.  Instead Shannon and Jessica had her on different adventures each day…to get her out and having fun, while mixing in home therapy in between.  On Saturday we pushed her…only not so hard as the week before.  This kid did great…and even survived a 50 minute bike ride around the neighborhood.

Sunday…let the egg hunts being.  All week we were prepping for Easter…talking up the Easter Bunny, egg hunts and golden eggs.  Ciaran woke up excited more than ever!  We started off when Ciaran’s cousins came over, Alli, Cade and Anna.  Alli and Cade, much older than Ciaran and 2 year old Anna, were great showing the little gals the ropes of the “egg hunt.”  Both had a blast…equally fun for Ciaran was watching when we turned the older kids loose on the well hidden, well stocked eggs…

After a little lunch, the Easter sun dress was popped on and down we went to the Beach Club for the annual “Hunt for the Golden Egg”.  Of course “annual” is relative, since we haven’t been to the Golden Egg hunt since April 2009…before Ciaran’s infection.  A combination of things kept up from this timeless tradition that Shannon and I both did as young kids.

Dozens of kids (in the 4-6 yr old grouping)  lined up ready to go.  Even getting to this part, Ciaran might not have been able to handle a year ago…too many people, too much stimulation…but not today.  She was not to be denied!. Crammed into the mix of kids and parents, she was up on her feet being support / held by myself and Shannon armed with an mountain of camera.  Let the games being….after every kid headed right, we went left, in search of the golden egg.  Ciaran had a blast.  With a ton of friends and family looking on, Ciaran held her basket, and just like in early ’09, she observed, she grabbed a few eggs, we sat, we stood, we smiled.

Although Ciaran didn’t technically find the Golden Egg (we left that to her cousin Decky)…but we felt like we had found it.  This was a major hurdle for all of us.  Ciaran physically…and us mentally.  We didn’t know how hard this was going to be, but in the end, all of us put every obstacle aside and went for that golden moment on a golden day…and together, as a family found the golden egg.

We hope you all had a great Easter.

Ciaran Update – St Patrick meet St Ciaran – 3.18.12

Hi,

As you can imagine, with a name like “Ciaran”, St Patrick’s day is a big holiday for us.  The last few years have been pretty tame as Ciaran has been in “healing” mode.  Her ability to handle crowds, loud noises, and bag pipes has finally gotten to a stable place.  After laying around most of Saturday, “saving” up Ciaran’s energy, we headed down to the Beach Club to enjoy the “holiday”.  There we b-lined to the “Kid’s Clubhouse” where we ran into Ciaran’s cousins Barrett and Decky as well as a few of other friends.

After a little arts and crafts, we quickly took our seats for the show.  A group of young girls came out to perform traditional Irish dancing.  Bag pipes blaring, the girls were great dancers…and Ciaran loved every minute of it.  Every time a dance would end and the crowd would clap, Ciaran would laugh her head off.  After a bunch of dances, the leader invited the kids in the crowd to come up and learn a few steps.  The warrior princess was not to be denied a chance for a little irish gig…

I brought Ciaran up and the little dancing gals were really nice to include her and show her a few moves.  We jumped into the circle with the “pro dancers” and the kids from the audience.  Ciaran really had a golly ‘ol time dancing and hopping around as I supported her.  The fact that we were able to get up there with the other kids and do the best we could, felt great (for all of us mentally).  They kept asking us to hop on the right leg with the left leg up…and then switch.  After about 10 of these requests, with kids dancing around us, Ciaran put her weight on her right foot and lifted her left…and then when they asked us to switch, she put her weight on her left and lifted her right.  It was awesome!  She was only able to do it once, but once is enough for us! All in all a very successful St Patrick’s day.

The day prior, Shannon and I loaded up the car with Ciaran’s bike and took Ciaran out to school for the Trike-A-Thon.  All the kids get on their trikes and race around a mini track while the parents and teachers cheer them on.  We were really excited because, finally, Ciaran could do something just like the other kids.  While most of the parents sat in the middle with their cameras taking pictures or filming their kids, Shannon and I were looked like a few crazy chickens running back and forth from end to end taking video, taking pictures….we were the overly excited duo so fired up that this kid was in the mix.  Teacher Erika was a huge help as she pushed Ciaran from behind as the other kids zipped around her.  Down the slight incline straight away, this kid pushed with all her might and didn’t need any assistance as she was great at peddling the heavy 3-wheeler herself.  8 laps later in the pre-storm 50 degree temps, she was toast (of course so were the other kids).  After a few pix and a popsicle payout , she was happy as can be and we headed home.

Sunday, we finished off the weekend with a family birthday dinner for Ciaran’s Grandma Edie.  She was able to have some fun with Edie, Rascal and her cousin’s Alli, Cade and Anna.

In a month where we haven’t seen a lot of progress to do being sick (ear infection, sinus infection, flu…etc) and two rounds of antibiotics later…St Ciaran had a great “holiday” 3-day weekend.  We are hoping for a little more luck of the irish with this being a good start to the 2nd half of the month.

Ciaran Update – A “Leap”ing February – 2.25.12

Hanging out with her Cousins

Hi,

In a month that only has an extra day every fourth year, this is Ciaran’s 2nd leap year, but the first post accident.

Progress, has been slow and inconsistent but a few good flashes here and there.

One coming last weekend, when after an hour in the stander, I held her up and supported her weak core by holding her under her arms / chest and asked the little fighter to take a few steps.  We were standing in our sun room in the house and as she raised her knee and took a step, she followed it up with another step.  Usually she stops after only a few of these since coordinating the movement back and forth is pretty hard.  Well last Saturday, she didn’t stop.  As we proceeded together (as I head her up), she was about 6 steps in when we headed to the one little stair/step in our house that goes from the Sunroom into the rest of the house.

Sneaking into Marquez School on a Sunday to hit the Slide!

Ciaran put her weight on her left leg and, as I held her up, she took the right foot and took a giant “leap” up the step into the main house, grinning from ear to ear.  This kid wasn’t done.  Together we walked all the way through the house and ended up in her room…step after step, no pauses, no breaks, nothing…just high knees like a running back coming through the line of scrimmage trying to score a touchdown…Just a determined little gal!   I was just so proud her my eyes started to well up.  Although we haven’t repeated the distance since, for that one moment in time, it  reaffirmed that the skills are in there…it’s just going to take time and repetition.

We remind ourselves all the time, we aren’t fixing the legs.  We aren’t fixing the hands or the mouth (eating), it’s the brain we are training, and training and training.  It’s really never ending at this point.  If you want to be a good golfing, you have to keep playing, keep practicing, keeping at it.  In Ciaran’s case, she works so hard to just relearn the things that come naturally to us as a baby and a child.

Ciaran’s speech has started to slowly improve.  She is beginning to respond more.  We ask her what she wants to do today…she replies.  We ask her what food option she wants to eat, she replies.  The replies are great…except that we can usually only understand about 10% of them.  The vocal cords really start to light up when she is laying down.

So much therapy (PT, OT, Brain, etc) all wrapped into one...

Why is that?  Less to focus on, as she doesn’t have to control her head, her body, her hands, etc.  She can just lay back and yap away…

Tonight we had another “leap” moment.  Every night Ciaran and I say a little prayer before she falls asleep.  It usually goes down with me saying 5 little verses and then I tap her on the hand which is her queue to say “aaaa-meeen”.  Some times I have to tap her hand a few times to get both the “aaa” and the “meeen” out of her together.  Well tonight, Ciaran decided she would trump me by either saying (in her own slurry way) 4 out of the 5 verses or finishing the last word or two of a verses…and finished up by saying the last verse completely and then coupled with a clear as day, “Amen!”.  I’m not sure who was more proud, Ciaran or myself as she smiled wildly…at that point it was my queue to have my eye well up again.

Jessica has been a true rock star for our family and Ciaran.  With Shannon now at 5 months pregnant, Shannon is unable to pick up Ciaran who has gotten pretty tall and heavy.  Jessica has been putting in very long and hard 12 hour days.  Her work with Ciaran is really showing both in the examples above and the fact that Ciaran is so wiped out, she is asleep at 6:30p every night.  She has been great pushing the repetitions needed to get Ciaran better, bringing a positive attitude and incredible work ethic each and every day.  We are very blessed to have her.  We know Ciaran is excited to see her as she yells out “Jesss-kaa” when she comes in the door at 6:30a to get ready for school.

the 100 yard dash...Ciaran's way...

All in all, we are hoping that during 2012,  we see more and more “leap” moments and by 2016…these things will just be part of Ciaran’s every day way of life.

Thank you for continuing following Ciaran’s progress.  It really means so much to us and our family.

Happy Leap Year!

Ciaran Update – Communicating in January

Hi,

I figured I’d share a letter from Ciaran speech / communication teacher at school:

“Ciaran has been making some exciting growth in the area of communication….

Ciaran's trip to the Eye Doctor

Ciaran has been taking an increased interest in the use of assistive technology and computer software.  She appears to delight in taking turns with her friends to play computer games.  Yesterday, I was showing Teacher Julia (The vision instructor) how well Ciaran was attending to the computer software, and activating the program using a large switch.  At one point the switch was positioned at an awkward angle, and Ciaran (highly motivated to move the program along) leaned over and hit it with her chin!  After I repositioned the switch, she returned to using her hand, but I was so impressed by her problem solving skills and interest in the game.

We have also been trying the iPad out…  Our next step is to try a wireless switch to activate that device as well.

Ciaran has been making activity and material choices by activating a ‘yes’ switch or touching our hand to indicate affirmation.  Next week, we will also try using a dual switch, with one response for ‘yes’ and one for ‘no’.”

Move over Tiger...here comes Ciaran!

We were pleased her progress as you can imagine.  Ciaran loves talking about school.  It’s not enough to say, “yes” or “no”.  The other day we asked her if she went on the swing at school and she replied, “I diid.”  When we asked if she had fun with arts and crafts, she replied, “III diiid.”  When we ask her about her day, she goes on and on about her day in full sentences that you can’t really understand…but at least she is trying and that is what we want.  The more she tries, the sooner she gets it right.

All and all, a good start back up at school and a good January.  Ciaran is mostly excited about the arrival of a new brother in July.  She gets a giant smile when we mention that she is going to be a big sister.

Formal PT has sort of dropped off with school starting but Jessica is doing a great job pushing her after school, getting her on the matt and working on that upper body strength as well as pushing the legs on the bike.  This helps as she is getting heavy.  We can learn her up from her chair and stand her on her feet before picking her up.  Much easier on our backs!

All in all, a good start to the year but we still have a long way to go.
